Stepping into a Dare Drama lesson is being welcomed by a big group of new friends you haven’t yet met. We employ a rotating buddy system during the three week drama trial period  so new friends (and their parents) feel at home right away.

We start off each drama session by leaving the day behind us with a few minutes of mindfulness in the form of meditations, gratitude, and games to explore presence. Once we are connected to ourselves and the class, we get up and get energised for the drama lesson with a whole group physical activity to loosen up our inhibitions and to increase coordination and imagination. The last part of our drama session warm up is our voice work where we explore how to breathe, speak loudly, and not mumble.

The main part of our sessions are varied and ever changing based on student needs and feedback. Through monologues, pair work, and whole class scenes, we explore a variety of themes, characters and physicality, and perform back to the class at least twice each and every session.

We end our sessions with high energy improvisational challenges which develop creativity and trust amongst participants, and encourage students to really laugh at themselves. Getting out of their heads and deconstructing that “I’m scared to look silly” mindset is at the core of self acceptance and self confidence, and helps students let go of the fear of failure and understand that making mistakes is all part of the learning process – and in drama class mistakes are usually pretty funny!

Our weekly drama sessions follow the school term and students perform twice a year in front of an audience.

We create opportunities for all of our students to shine and sparkle by sharing their unique talents and personalities with the world, and developing a “Yes, and” attitude to life. Through voice work, mindfulness, and theatre play we develop kids who speak with purpose and who grow to be resilient, positive, empathic young adults.
